I've always considered myself a terrible, terrible cook. I never really learned much about cooking from my parents while growing up, and consequently turned into pretty much the worst chef in the world. I burned Rice Krispy Treats, I messed up boxed macaroni and cheese, and I set fires. A lot. Just ask
lolavavoom . When we were living together our senior year of college, I'm pretty sure I set at least two fires over the course of the year.
I've been dating a chef for almost three and a half years now, so I guess it was only a matter of time before I started to want to cook myself. But I honestly didn't see it coming. All of a sudden, now I really enjoy cooking, and I'm not half bad at it! I can't do a ton yet, but I'm learning.
Yesterday, I made banana bread, and it turned out REALLY GOOD! I was shocked. I took some to my friend Steph, and she had no suggestions about how to make it better. She really liked it! And Dustin thought it was great too! And while I'm usually my own worst critic when it comes to my cooking, I looooooved it!
So, it's going to take some getting used to, but it feels like a huge accomplishment to me that I'm now able to make my own banana bread. Being able to cook makes me feel more grown up than most of the other things I do, for some reason. Much more than cleaning the house or paying bills or any of that other stuff. It was always that unattainable goal that I was never going to bother trying to conquer. But now I have, or am working on it, and I feel supercool!
I know, I'm a huge dork for being so excited about this. Imagine what it feels like to be totally helpless when it comes to food, having to order out if you don't have anyone to cook for you. Then imagine that helplessness suddenly being gone. It's exciting!
Oh, and happy birthday
kevinm126 ! A little early, but I'll forget by Monday. Yay!

Five days after my thesis project was due. It was accepted, by the way, if anyone is reading.
January 20.
Five days before I am officially graduated from Boston University with a Master of Science in Journalism.
January 20.
The day when George W. Bush moves out of the White House. The day when the first black president of the United States is sworn in. The day when hope replaces despair in the minds of so many poor, sick, underprivileged Americans. The day when I sit on the edge of my seat staring at the screens, searching with my eyes and ears for sudden movements, screams of fear rather than excitement, or a gun being shot. The day when I curse all those JFK comparisons that were made months ago.
January 20.
The day the milk goes bad.
